Last week the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) participated in a Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) mentoring event at the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History. Julie Conklin, Chief, Data Analysis and Stewardship Section and Staci King, Bureau Interagency Coordinator, participated in a round-table show-and-tell discussion with 60+ middle school students and their teachers from DC metropolitan-area schools. Conklin and King highlighted their personal journeys into technical careers and public service. The theme of their discussion was the importance of safety and teamwork.
The event, co-hosted by the Department of Education, the Department of Energy, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Association of Science and Technology Centers, was part of BSEE’s outreach efforts to engage today’s youth in participating in managing our natural resources. Earlier this year Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell formalized the ambitious initiative to inspire millions of young people to PLAY, LEARN, SERVE AND WORK outdoors. The initiative is establishing meaningful and deep connections between young people – from every background and every community – and America’s great outdoors. Through these connections the Department of Interior is investing in the future caretakers of the nation’s public lands.
