BSEE Provides Youth with Close-up Look at Offshore Oil and Gas

NEW ORLEANS – As part of the U.S. Department of the Interior’s ongoing effort to attract young people to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, BSEE hosted a 'Bring a Child to Work' event July 29 in the Gulf of Mexico Regional Office. The group of 28 elementary and middle school-aged children were invited to participate in a morning of activities that helped them to understand BSEE's mission and offshore oil and gas operations.

Subject matter experts from BSEE’s different program areas described their duties and gave hands-on demonstrations of what their roles entail and why each is important in the process of ensuring energy resources are harvested safely. Participants were able to visit stations that allowed them to simulate taking core samples, drilling a well, and designing an offshore platform.

This outreach effort is part of the PLAY, LEARN, SERVE and WORK outdoors initiative to engage today’s youth in participating in the management of our nation’s public lands and resources.
