S. Elizabeth Birnbaum Sworn in as MMS Director

S. Elizabeth (Liz) Birnbaum, former Staff Director for the Committee on House Administration and the Department of the Interior’s Associate Solicitor for Mineral Resources, has assumed her duties as the 10thDirector of the Minerals Management Service (MMS). Leading the MMS, Birnbaum will be responsible for an annual budget of $323 million and 1,600 employees.

'I'm excited to join Secretary Salazar’s team and continue his initiative to push our nation toward a new energy frontier,' Birnbaum said.

Birnbaum received her Juris Doctor from Harvard University in 1984 and her A.B. degree, magna cum laude, from Brown University in 1979. She was Editor in Chief of the Harvard Environmental Law Review, Vol. 8.

 The Minerals Management Service manages the nation's offshore Renewable Energy Program as well as the development of natural gas, oil and other mineral resources on the Outer Continental Shelf. The agency also collects, accounts for and disburses more than $13 billion per year in revenues from Federal offshore mineral leases and from onshore mineral leases on Federal and American Indian lands.
