Research

Research and information needs can emerge anywhere in BSEE and can be used to inform different decisions, policies or procedures on offshore energy. Use-inspired research projects are then developed and funneled through either the Oil Spill Preparedness Division’s Oil Spill Response Research branch or through the Office of Offshore Regulatory Programs’ Emerging Technologies Branch. Additionally, BSEE’s Environmental Compliance Program receives use-inspired research products from its partner, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, to inform the preparation of required documents and other environmental compliance activities. Once research products are peer-reviewed, they are shared publicly and can then be used to inform several activities or decisions, including but not limited, to regulations, permits, NEPA process, inspections, technology assessments, investigations, environmental compliance, standards development and updating, and more. To procure the information needed, BSEE uses different acquisition vehicles, such as cooperative agreements, interagency agreements and different types of government contracts.
