This was a joint project with the Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory (NCEL), and an adjunct to Project No. 58. The objective was to investigate developing conditional ocean wave simulation models which include extreme events. Methods for estimating a directional wave spectrum from various ocean sensors were developed and are being used by design engineers. A major problem exists regarding using directional spectrum information in extreme event design. The spectrum is an expression of 'average' conditions but for certain design requirements engineers must know maximum conditions.
