BSEE and Coast Guard Officials Meet to Discuss Maritime Cyber Risk Management

WASHINGTON - Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) officials met yesterday at BSEE headquarters in Washington to discuss cyber risk management. This meeting was a continuation of discussions initiated during the Maritime Cyber Research Summit, held at the California Maritime Academy's Maritime Safety and Security Center in Richmond, Calif. June 16-17.

Discussions during the meeting focused on cyber risks in the maritime environment. The USCG discussed  the recently released U.S Coast Guard Cyber Strategy and feedback received during a January 2015 public meeting on cyber risk management. Additionally, the two agencies discussed how to manage probability and detection of cyber incidents and whether there are relevant standards to learn from on maritime cyber risk management. The two agencies agreed to future collaborative efforts to include the creation of a working group to continue discussions and information sharing.

This is part of BSEE's continuing efforts to understand and prepare for new risks associated with offshore oil and gas activities, to include cyber. The topic will be included in upcoming Ocean Energy Safety Institute Forums. The next forum will be held July 29 at the The University of Houston's Michael J. Cemo Hall.
